Oak gazebos · louvred pergolas · kitchen bases

Green-oak gazebos, louvred pergolas & outdoor kitchen bases built to stay put.

A heavy oak frame or an aluminium roof is only as steady as the concrete under its posts. We dig each foundation below frost depth, build the frame or counter on top, and lay the cable duct so your electrician can finish the job.

01 · THREE WAYS TO USE YOUR TERRACE MORE

Shade, shelter or somewhere to cook, priced up front.

We build all three on new or existing terraces. The photos below show the sort of patios we build them on; David brings frame samples and brochures to your survey.

Green-Oak Gazebo

From £4,800 (3×3m)

A traditional frame in seasoned green oak, joined with oak pegs rather than screws. Oak moves and opens small surface cracks as it dries over its first summers. That is normal and does not weaken it. Roofed in cedar shingles, slate or clear polycarbonate.

Aluminium Louvred Pergola

From £7,400 (3×4m)

Sometimes called a bioclimatic pergola. The roof is a row of powder-coated aluminium blades that you tilt open for sun or close for rain. Water runs into gutters hidden in the frame and down the posts, which we connect to a soakaway or drain.

Outdoor Kitchen & Pizza-Oven Base

From £3,200 (2.4m)

A brick or blockwork counter on its own concrete slab, topped in porcelain to match your patio, with a recess for a built-in BBQ and an optional raised plinth and fire-safe hearth for a pizza oven. We lay the cable duct before the slab goes in.

02 · WHAT HOLDS IT UP

Concrete pads below the frost line.

In a Cheshire winter, frost can reach about 450mm into the ground. Wet clay that freezes swells and lifts anything sitting in it. So every post sits on a concrete pad at least 600mm deep, and deeper still on shrinkable clay near large trees, where the ground also shrinks in dry summers.

Posts never sit in the soil Each pad has a galvanised steel post shoe cast into the concrete. The timber or aluminium post bolts onto the shoe, clear of the ground, so it cannot rot or rust at the base.

  2. ConcreteStructural concrete poured in one goA solid block that will not tilt when the clay around it moves.
  3. ShoeGalvanised post shoe set by laserEvery shoe at exactly the same height, so the roof sits level.
  4. DuctArmoured cable duct to the houseBuried 450–600mm deep with warning tape above, before the paving goes back.

Full specification (for the curious)

Pads: minimum 450×450×600mm in C20/ST2 concrete; increased to 900mm or more within the influence zone of trees on high-shrinkage clay. Where a pergola sits on an existing patio, we core through the slabs and cast the pad below rather than bolting onto paving.

Outdoor kitchen slab: 100mm reinforced concrete slab on 150mm compacted MOT Type 1, with the duct cast in. Counter in engineering brick or dense block, porcelain bonded with flexible exterior adhesive.

Cable: steel wire armoured (SWA) cable in twin-wall duct with a draw cord, warning tape 150mm above. Connection, testing and certification by a Part P registered electrician.

03 · POWER, LIGHTS & GAS

We dig and duct. Qualified trades connect.

Electrics We are groundworkers, not electricians. We lay armoured SWA cable in a protective duct from your house to the pergola or kitchen, ready for lights, heaters or a fridge. A Part P registered electrician then connects, tests and certifies it. We can recommend one, or you can use your own.
Gas BBQs and pizza ovens Most outdoor kitchens run on bottled gas, wood or charcoal, which need no gas work. If you want a mains gas supply, that must be fitted by a Gas Safe registered engineer. We leave a sleeve through the counter so it is a simple job for them.

05 · QUESTIONS

Gazebo, pergola & kitchen questions

Will I need planning permission?+
Usually not, if it stays under 2.5m high within 2 metres of a boundary, is not in front of the house, and garden buildings do not cover more than half your garden. Listed buildings and conservation areas can be different. We check with Stockport Council or Cheshire East before we order anything.
Can you put a pergola on my existing patio?+
Yes. We lift or core through the slabs where each post goes, dig the pad below, and make good around the post shoe with matching paving or a neat collar.
Why is my oak cracking?+
Green oak dries slowly after it is built and opens fine surface cracks called shakes. They are expected, they do not weaken the frame, and many close up again in damp weather. The oak turns a soft silver-grey within a couple of years unless you oil it.
Do you supply the BBQ and pizza oven?+
We can, or you can choose your own. Either way, tell us the model at the survey so we build the recess, hearth and plinth to its exact size.
