Porcelain patios, resin driveways & garden makeovers in Wilmslow (SK9).

From Fulshaw Park to Lacey Green and the Bollin Valley, Wilmslow homes want two things from us: a drive that soaks up rain without planning hassle, and a patio that runs level out of the kitchen doors. We build both, and we know Wilmslow ground is not the same as Stockport’s.

01 · WILMSLOW GROUND IS DIFFERENT

Sandy in the middle, peaty out at Lindow, clay towards Handforth.

Much of central Wilmslow sits on sand and gravel left by old glaciers and the River Bollin. It drains far better than the sticky clay we dig in Bramhall, which is good news for permeable drives: rain soaks away quickly through the stone.

The catch is that loose sand moves sideways under weight. So on Wilmslow drives we take extra care with the edges: every granite kerb is set in concrete, and a strong fabric layer stops the sand mixing into the stone base.

Out towards Lindow Common and Lindow Moss we sometimes hit soft, dark peat. Peat squashes like a sponge, so we dig it out until we reach firm ground, even if that means going deeper than our usual 310mm. North towards Handforth and Dean Row the clay returns, and we treat it the Stockport way.

02 · A DRIVE THAT NEEDS NO PLANNING PERMISSION

How we build a permeable Wilmslow drive, in six steps.

*Since 2008, paving a front garden over 5 m² needs no planning permission as long as rain can soak through it or drain onto your own lawn or border. Resin-bound and Tegula permeable blocks both qualify. A new dropped kerb still needs Cheshire East’s approval, and we help with that form.

  1. Choose the finish

Resin-bound gravel (smooth, honey or silver tones, no weeds) or Marshalls Tegula blocks (traditional tumbled look). Both are £140/m² all‑in with us.

  2. Dig to firm ground

310mm out as standard, deeper wherever we find peat or old garden soil. Everything goes in a licensed grab lorry.

  3. Fabric and kerbs

Heavy fabric over the ground, then granite kerbs set in concrete to hold the edges tight on sandy soil.

  4. 250mm open stone base

Clean crushed stone with gaps for water to pass through, rolled in three layers so heavy electric cars never leave ruts.

  5. Binder or bedding

Under resin: a 50mm open-textured base course. Under blocks: 40mm of washed grit, levelled to a laser line.

  6. Surface and clean-up

Resin hand-trowelled in one go, or blocks laid and brushed in. You can walk on resin the next day and drive on it after two.

"We didn't want planning permission delays for a new two-car drive. David specified a full SuDS permeable resin-bound system with charcoal granite borders. Zero weeds, zero puddles, and rock-solid under two electric SUVs." — Andrew & Fiona Bell, Wilmslow (SK9)

04 · INDOOR-OUTDOOR LIVING, DONE SAFELY

A flush step-out from bifolds needs a drain, not just good looks.

Lots of Lacey Green and Fulshaw Park extensions come with wide bifold or sliding doors. A level threshold looks lovely, but only if rain has somewhere to go before it reaches the door.

Paving simply butted up to the door

  • ✗Driving rain splashes against the frame and finds its way under the door sill.
  • ✗Paving sits above the damp-proof course, so walls can start to show damp patches inside.
  • ✗Often voids the door maker’s warranty.

Our flush threshold

  • ✓A slim slot drain runs the full width of the doors, catching water before it reaches the frame (£95 per metre).
  • ✓The rest of the patio stays 150mm below the damp-proof course and falls gently away from the house.
  • ✓Porcelain picked to match your indoor tiles where possible, so the floor seems to carry on outside.
