Conservation areasParts of Alderley Edge and the old centre of Prestbury village are conservation areas. Back-garden patios are rarely a problem, but front walls, gates and frontages are more closely watched. Natural stone and traditional setts almost always sit better with Cheshire East’s conservation officers than bright modern finishes.
Tree Preservation OrdersMany of the big oaks, beeches and limes here are protected. If a tree has an order on it, or sits in a conservation area, the council must be told before roots or branches are cut. We look up your address on Cheshire East’s tree map before we draw a single line.
Root protection zonesThe British Standard for building near trees (BS 5837) sets a circle around each trunk, roughly 12 times the trunk’s width, where roots must not be cut or crushed. Inside it we use no-dig bases instead of excavating.
Gates and walls by the roadNew gates, walls or pillars over 1 metre high next to a road normally need planning permission. Set back, or kept under that height, they usually don’t. We design gated drives with this in mind from the start.
